The Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) is a comprehensive behavioural programme for treating substance abuse problems – showing just how powerful a role the community and environment can play in encouraging or discouraging drink or drug misuse.  

The Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) is a 2 day workshop involving a comprehensive behavioural programme for treating substance abuse problems. It is based on the belief the environment contingencies can play a powerful role in encouraging or discouraging drinking or drug use. Consequently, it utilises social, recreational, familial, and vocational reinforcers to assist consumers in the recovery process. It’s goal is to make a sober lifestyle more rewarding than the use of substances.

Psychologists, Counsellors, Psychotherapists, Youth Workers, Social Care Workers, Community Workers 

Learning outcomes

  • To equip students with the tools to enable them to develop and build on their own skills in working with clients while using the CRA approach and principles.
  • To strengthen and underpin existing knowledge in relation to CRA within the group.
  • To enhance confidence in participants in working with clients who are experiencing addiction while using CRA.
  • To provide space and time for participants to become familiar with CRA and allowing time to explore the skilss associated with working with people using CRA tools and skills. This will be achieved by role play’s of “real clients” taken from the group. 

The aim of the 2 day workshop is to provide an overview of CRA and to provide information on the approach and its principles. There will be time allocated to practice the skills associated with CRA. There will be “real” scenarios take from the group and then worked on using these skills. This is done to enhance the learning experience and to make the connection between theory and practice. 

The particpants are asked to contribute to the training both in large groups and smaller ones. There will be a number of exercises throughout the training. 

The training will allow participants to contribute by using examples of anonymous clients that they have worked with or are currently working with.

Theory into practice: 

The training will allow some role play that will encourage theory into practice. 
Information giving: There will be handouts and information on relevant reading that will be distributed at each day’s training.

Worker led: 
The training will be flexible to the needs of the group. 

DAY 1 (similar format for Day 2) 
10.00-11.00 – Introduction to CRA 

Coffee break
11.15-13.15 – Students will develop their understanding of the CRA approach. 
13.15-14.00 – lunch break
14..00-16.00 – The methodology used in this training will be a combination of Participative, Experiential, Therory into practice (role play), Information giving (handouts).

Presenters: David Mc Phillips
David McPhillips has worked with adolescent substance misusers for the last 4 years heading up a team for delivery of evidence based supports (ACRA, 5 Step) to young people and parents.
Previously David has worked with long term unemployed and also has worked as a trainer for a number of years. David is a qualified ACRA Trainer, holds a Msc in Drug and Alcohol Policy from Trinity, a diploma in Adult Guidance and is currently studying for a PhD in the University of Limerick. David’s interest lie in the area of addiction and recovery, engagement and creative interventions.
